Knowing What A JD Degree Stands For

A JD degree is a Juris Doctor degree and the first law degree you can get. It is a post graduate degree, so you must have a bachelor in order to be eligible to get into the program. There is an online JD degree possibility, but the problem is that no online courses are accredited by the American Bar Association, and to take your bar exam you must attend an accredited program. Luckily, California is the one state that doesn't require an accredited program to be eligible for the bar. As long as the program is registered with The Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California, you can pursue it online for your legal education. You must complete 864 study hours for 4 years, and then sit a 3 day bar exam to be licensed to practice law in California. The courses you will take will start off with the basics, like torts, property law and civil procedures, and then progress to more detailed subjects like family law, trusts, commercial law, labor law and criminal law. To then practice in other states, you will need to either get your LLM degree or work in California for 5-7 years which then makes you eligible to take the bar exam in another state without having attended an accredited school.

Where you can get a JD Degree Online

There are a few recommended institutes that are registered with the Committee and offer an online JD degree program. Some of the more reputable ones include Concord Law school, Newport University, William Howard Taft University, West Haven University, West Coast School of Law, Inc, Esquire College and California School of Law. In total there are about 14 registered schools, but since none are accredited, you need to look into their reputation, quality and education to pick the best one for you.

Career Opportunities

There are different legal positions you can hold with a Juris Doctor degree. There is an entry level lawyer, general or associate attorney and general or corporate counsel. You could also use your JD in association with other backgrounds and work in sports, negotiating contracts, in the arts, working with foundations to resolve tax and copyright issues, in health care to use your legal background to move up the medical ranks faster or provide testimony on medical malpractice suits or in science, working with chief environmentalists or compliance experts. Having an online JD degree can open so many doors for you, not only in the legal world, but in many other fields where your law background can be incorporated. It is a great stepping stone for an ambitious future.
