Online Degree Problems
To begin with, if you want to earn your tax law degree online, you may want to reconsider. The American Bar Association does not currently accredit distance law degree programs. This means that a distance law degree program will only qualify you to take the bar exam in California, the only state that does not follow the ABA guidelines for determining degree requirements. To take the bar exam in California, you will need a law degree program approved by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State of California. This will enable any potential tax lawyer to practice in California courts, or any federal courts if he/she successfully passes the exam.
Finding a Suitable School Is Crucial
Someone who is committed to earning a tax law degree should probably do some investigating of their potential law schools to see which is generally most respected in the field of tax law. Not all programs will excel in every given area of law for example. Additionally, it is advisable to consider schools which offer some structure to those who wish to focus their education on tax law, or possibly even a separate degree altogether.
A few schools currently offer standalone tax law degree programs. One of which is the MS of Tax Law offered by the John Marshall Law School of Chicago, IL. This school was founded in 1899 and accredited by the ABA in 1951. This degree, however, is not designed for those seeking to become practicing lawyers, and is instead more suitable for accountants. Although it cannot offer distance degree programs, it is unique in that it does offer evening classes and January enrollment, allowing for more flexibility than many law schools.
