Information On The Different Types Of Law Degrees

Types Of Law Degrees

LLB or JD Degree

There are many types of law degrees to consider depending on your future ambitions and depending on the country you live in or want to practice in. The first law degree to get is either the LLB, which is the bachelor of laws degree offered mostly in Canada and the UK, or the Juris Doctor degree in the US which is a post graduate doctorate degree and therefore requires you to have a bachelor already. These first law degrees differ in their credentials but otherwise provide similar curriculum; incorporating the fundamentals of law like writing contracts, criminal justice, corporate law and torts which are all required knowledge for your bar exam. They are 3-4 year courses that must be taken at an accredited institute, other than in California where you can pursue your Juris Doctorate online at a non-accredited school.

LLM Degree

The LLM degree is the Master of Laws, and it is an internationally recognized law degree. You can only take this 2 year program if you have your JD or LLB, and it generally helps you specialize in a particular area of law. Some common specialties are tax law, divorce law, immigration law, fraud law,  international law or commercial law. It is becoming a more common degree to get given the amount of competition exists amongst budding lawyers, and not only do employers like the skills it brings to your chosen area of concentration, but it also allows you to work in other countries if desired or necessary.

SJD or JSD Degree

The SJD degree is the Doctor of Juridicial Science, and it is the highest law degree available. It is the equivalent to the Doctor of Philosophy in Law, but it is not a very common degree for students to get since it really caters to students who intend to teach law in the future. You must already possess an LLM degree, and to graduate you must write a dissertation that is a valuable contribution to the world of law.

Combined Law Degrees

There is also the possibility at some schools to go for joint law degrees, so for example you could get your Juris Doctor degree combined with a Masters in Business Administration. This would be a good combination for a prospective corporate lawyer to have. These joint degrees are really valuable for anyone intending to focus on one area and can benefit from the skills learned from both fields.

The different types of law degrees available simply cater to the different levels and fields of law you can choose from. You need to be clear on what you want to do with your education in order to decide how much to study.
